WINTER WONDERLAND

My trips into Yellowstone totaled five this winter! So much beauty. Two of the trips were with National Geographic and one of those was a photography based trip. Some of my clients have been kind enough to share their photos from that trip (and others). I love the photography adventures because I get to work on my skills as well!

Here are some highlights...

THE CURIOUS PINE MARTEN

This adorable weasel's looks deceive it's great hunting skills. They often catch prey much larger than itself. Robert Caddy got these pics.

Tim Lewis wasn't on the photography trip but he also has an eye for "shooting" bison.

I am so fortunate to guide so many fun, interesting and talented individuals. Here is a group shot of from one of this year's trips. What a crew!                        

MY RECENT PICS

The Winterkeeper at Canyon is responsible for keeping the roofs of various buildings in the area from collapsing under the tremendous amount of snow the park gets each year. He and a co-worker are seen below clearing the roof that houses a restaurant and gift shop. He's been doing this gig for 40+ years! The snow on the roof is over 6ft high. They cut the snow into blocks with saws and then push the incredibly heavy snow off the roof. With 300-400 inches of snow so far this winter the entire side of this building disappears behind the wall of removed snow, only the roofline is visible!

Beehive Geyser's eruption is more erratic and higher than Old Faithful's. Intervals between eruption can be up to more than 24 hours and it consistently spouts to 200 feet, compared to Old Faithfuls whose average is 145 feet. As we walked by we were surprised by its eruption! Lucky to catch it but not so lucky to be drenched by it in the middle of winter. An incredible sight though, even when soaked.

Winter in Yellowstone is always magical. The ice rink at Snow Lodge in Old Faithful simply magnifies this allure. Don't you expect to see Anna and Elsa gliding along this "frozen" scape?

And so after five trips this winter season to our country's first National Park I had my last ski and bid one of my favorite places in the world adieu!
